Houses that remember the light, the stone, the sea.

A small studio working between Lisbon and the Atlantic coast, designing residences, retreats and quiet public spaces with a respect for material, climate and the slow weight of time.

Casa do Pinheiro

A coastal residence in Comporta, completing winter 2026.

Approach

A practice rooted in place, drawn slowly, built to last beyond us.

Studio model and material samples
Philosophy

We design what is necessary, and refuse what is merely fashionable.

Each project begins on the ground — walking the site, listening to the wind, learning the stone. From those notes we draw plans that try to disappear into the landscape rather than impose upon it.

  • 01

    Material honesty

Lime plaster, raw oak, riven slate. Surfaces that age into themselves.

  • 02

    Climatic intelligence

Cross-ventilation, deep reveals, courtyards. Comfort without machinery.

  • 03

    Slow craftsmanship

We work with a small circle of Portuguese makers and masons, by hand.

  • 04

    Quiet detail

Joinery, ironmongery, shadow gaps — drawn at 1:1 until they vanish.

Process

Four movements, from the first walk to the last fitting.

i.

Listening

Site visits, conversations, archival drawings. We do not draw before we understand.

ii.

Drawing

Hand sketches and physical models. We test light, mass and proportion in cardboard before pixels.

iii.

Making

Detailed packages issued to a trusted circle of builders. Mock-ups for every surface.

iv.

Living

We return after a year. Buildings should improve with weather and use.

Project N.º 038

Casa Salgueiro, Sintra

A four-bedroom residence carved into a granite hillside above the Atlantic. Lime walls, oak shutters, a single chimney that draws the western sun across the kitchen at five each evening.

Words

From those who have lived in the rooms we drew.

"They listened more than they spoke. The house we now live in feels older than the land it sits on — in the best possible way."

"A studio of rare patience. Drawings arrived hand-bound; details were resolved in person, on the floor, with chalk."

"Verão understood that a restaurant is first a room. The light at lunch, the hush at dinner — it was all drawn."

Frequently Asked

Practical notes, before we begin.

How early should we engage the studio? +

Ideally before the land has been bought. We are happy to walk a site with you and offer an honest read of its potential, with no commitment.

Do you take projects outside Portugal? +

Selectively. We have completed work in southern Spain, the Aeolian islands and Tangier. We accept roughly two international commissions per year.

What is your typical project budget? +

Residential commissions begin around €1.2M of construction value. Smaller interventions — apartments, restaurants, exhibitions — are considered case by case.

Do you design furniture and lighting in-house? +

Yes. Most of our houses include bespoke joinery, hardware and light fittings made by a small group of Portuguese craftsmen we have worked with for over a decade.

How long does a residential project take? +

From first walk to handover, typically twenty-four to thirty months. We do not rush, and we do not compress.

Begin a Project

Tell us about the place you have in mind.

We open a small number of new commissions each year. A short note about the site, the brief, and your timeline is all we need to begin a conversation.
